If the badger is in the road, stop if it is safe so to do, and switch on the hazard warning lights.
Put gloves on and find a stick.
Approach slowly.
Try to ascertain if the badger could be alive e.g. stunned. Look for breathing. If it is definitely dead, if willing, drag into a ditch so it is out of sight.
If there is any chance that it is alive, do not put in your car.
Use your mobile phone to get What3Words location, then phone our badgerline: 07860 210414. Say if you can stay with badger until help arrives.
If you have to leave, phone again to say so, and put an obvious marker on the verge.
Wash gloves, stick and hands asap.
We will try to help badgers whenever possible, particularly in springtime as it may be a lactating sow: we will drive to the badger, and if it is still alive, we normally take it to St Tiggywinkles near Haddenham, Buckinghamshire. This can involve a lot of driving if our volunteer is coming from north-east Hertfordshire so please try to confirm that the badger is still alive, or if dead, whether it is lactating (enlarged teats) as we will then have to try to find the sett and rescue any cubs. We do not normally come out to dead badgers but would like you to fill in our online form so we have a record.
